Bad weather in North Norfolk on Saturday closed a local ferry
On Saturday afternoon, residents of Hoveton, between Walcott and Ostend on the North Norfolk coast, watched the waves grow higher and worried that the flood that hit their town in November was coming again. The Environmental Agency issued a flood warning, which caused the local ferry across the River Yare to shut down for the duration of the storm.
Sarah Weston was one of the people watching the waves on Saturday. “Local people we were speaking to felt the surge was nearly as bad as that in November. Although there was no flooding this time it seems things are definitely getting worse,” she said.
The A146 Beccles Road had to be closed for several hours during the afternoon because of flooding near St Olaves and in Reedham, the Yare Ferry shut down at 13:00 because of high water levels.
In Cantley, residents were also preparing for the worst. “We got sandbags out because the river was so high at one stage but there was no flooding,” said Sybina Hirschle, landlady of The Reedcutter.
Residents of Yarmouth met on the Haven Bridge to watch water levels rise, braving winds so strong, stable sheds from farms were tossed across fields in gale force winds of over 60 miles per hour.
