Sea-Streak ferries to stay where they are

New Yorkers may keep ferry service

Sea-Streak Ferries' parent company announced that it will not in fact be selling any of its vessels to Trinidad and Tobago, opting instead to negotiate with an as yet anonymous American buyer, effectively assuring the ferry's service will continue.

Passengers on the profitable ferry line into Manhattan feared a sale would cut service and they'd have to find another transport option. One passenger, John Kelleher says, "From what I've heard, this is a profitable ferry line, so it has intrinsic value. As long as they keep it as it is, that's the best outcome. We kind of don't care who owns it as long as our interests are aligned and they operate it at a high level."

Sea-Streak has been in a bit of trouble since 2006 when it's parent company, Sea Containers, Ltd filed for Chapter 11, tossing all non-core assets, Sea-Streak being one of them. Since then passengers have petitioned to keep the ferries running.

Sea Containers, Ltd spokesman Adrian Flook said, "As much as we do recognize the importance of SeaStreak, we also have a fiduciary duty to stakeholders of Sea Containers to get the best price for those assets. The decision of whether to continue service would be up to a potential new owner, but the base view is, if it is profitable from a commercial point of view, it shouldn't be at risk."
