10% rise in ferry-goers to Larne
Ferry Online Travel News 20/01/2008
Larne becoming gateway to Northern Ireland
Figures for the Larne ferry's 2007 performance show that passenger numbers were up 10% compared with 2006, bringing the total number up to 943,000. This increase shows an increase in passenger traffic of 70,000 people, and vehicles accounting for 17% more than they did in 2006.
Keith Millar, Larne Harbour's managing director says, "The range of ferry routes provided in Larne makes it an ideal option for tourists. Whether it's tourists visiting Northern Ireland, people holidaying on the mainland or for short business trips, Larne's location is ideal."
The harbour's freight traffic saw a significant increase as well, with Millar commenting that "Sometimes the ro-ro freight business isn't seen as glamorous by the public, but it is the lifeblood of our economy. All our major supermarkets and retail businesses rely almost entirely on ro-ro traffic."
Mr. Millar has bigger plans for the port as well, saying that the highway connecting Larne with Belfast is due for improvements, noting that funding to do so is coming from the Republic of Ireland.
