Storm warning subsides in southern UK
After the recent storms in southern England that caused so much chaos for travellers, the winds and rains have subsided and transport has begun to move again. The harsh waves crashing into the shore at Dover caused the ferry services to be suspended, but all ferries have returned to their regular schedules.
Ferries were not the only victims of the sever storms, fallen trees blocked roads and caused further delays in and out of the port of Dover. Such storms have become more common in southern England over the past years, and this past Wednesday, there were 27 flood watches and 7 flood warnings, but damage was minimized thanks to defence systems installed last year. Some areas like East Sussex and Robertsbridge may well need further improvements, as people piled sandbags around the towns to prevent incoming floodwaters.
The Environment Agency’s director Howard Davidson said, "The worst is over now for most people. Every time we come this close to flooding, it serves as a wake up call that we all need to be prepared."
