The Dover Coastguard helped a holed ferry.

On the evening of December 28th, the ferry ‘Speed 1’ was holed while in Dover. The ferry began to take in water and while there were no passengers on board the out of service ferry at the time, the Dover Coastguard, who was alerted to the incident, worked hard to secure the safety of the eight crew members on board at the time.

The Coastguard asked for the launch of a Dover Lifeboat in order to help the Speed 1 crew. The lifeboat brought its pump to the ferry and was met by the Folkestone Coastguard rescue team and their pump. An additional four pumps were provided by the Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

The Speed 1 crew stayed on board in order to assist the rescue crews with their pumping operations and together, they were successful in controlling the flooding into the ferry.

Divers were deployed in order to assess the damage to the ferry. The divers were also able to make some temporary repairs that night.

Although the rescue operation went smoothly, the rescuers were hampered by challenging weather conditions that night with wind gusting up to 42 knots during the rescue.
