Id required for the Northlink ferry

A new decision that will affect all passengers travelling from the mainland United Kingdom to any of the Northern Isles including Orkney and Shetland means that Northlink ferry operators will require some sort of photo identification as of May 1st this year.

The move to implement a photo ID requirement will put Northlink in compliance with other public transport institutions according to a company spokesperson, who cites these documents as acceptable forms of ID for riding the Northlink ferry service: A national ID or Smart ID card, a student ID or a workplace photo ID, a photo bank card, a photographic driving licence, a national concession scheme card or a passport.

Bill Davidson is the chief executive of Northlink, and he explains the decision like this: “There is an increasing need for us to do all that we can to ensure that passengers are, indeed, who they say they are. Of top priority is the growing importance of measures to ensure the safety and security of the passengers, crew and vessels. The ability to identify passengers boarding our vessels is a key part of our enhanced awareness and approach to security issues.”

He felt that the notice of the introduction of the policy should be made public as soon as possible so everyone planning Northlink trip will not be caught off guard come May 1st.
