National competition awards prize to ferry restoration project.

After winning the Big Lottery Fund Living Landmarks competition, the Blyth and Wansbeck ferry is slated for restoration after spending over a decade out of service.

The restoration project, Sustrans Connect 2, also plans to construct walking and cycling routes in 79 sections of England and Scotland using the £50 million prize. The project is a joint effort with Northumberland County Council.

Councillor Bill Brooks, the county council executive member for the environment, aided in the ferry restoration campaign.

"Out of all the projects, this had the most potential to drive up the quality of life for communities in the north east and all over the UK," Brooks said.

"The scheme will not only add to the excellent regeneration work already going on in the area, but will re-unite two communities that have been separated for too long by the River Blyth," Brooks added.

The project was also supported by author Bill Bryson and Lorraine Kelly of GMTV. Sustrans Connect 2 won 42 per cent of the total votes, giving it a landslide victory over the Eden Project, Sherwood Forest and Black Country Urban Park.
