Possible plans for a new ferry route.

Under the wishes of the Scottish Government, ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne is looking into the possibility of opening a ferry route between Mallaig and South Uist.

This new route would prove shorter than the one currently available between South Uist and Oban.

Donald Manford, chair of transportation at Western isles Council, said that the Scottish government requested that Calmac 'search for a vessel which is suitable to operate a Lochboisdale to Mallaig service.'

Although there is no fixed agreement for the purchase of a vessel, Manford said it is a likely move. 'As it is clear that CalMac is actively seeking a suitable vessel, this can be seen as a clear message that the government certainly wish to take forward this route,' Manford said.

Locals of the island say that a new ferry route would serve to increase tourism and help the economy.
