Merged ferry terminal scrapped

The proposed multi-million pound ferry terminal that was to be shared by P&O and Stena ferry lines has been shelved for what seems like for good, with organizers citing spiraling costs as the reason to back out of the project. The terminal was to serve Irish Sea links from the southwest area of Scotland. P&O already operate from the site at Cairnyan, while Stena planed to move their facilities six miles up the coast to build the joint terminal in the harbour.

The decision comes as a blow seeing the two companies have been discussing the prospect for more than four years. Work was slated to begin soon, with a completion date sometime in 2009, but a statement from the two companies regarding the halt to work stated the project was "simply no longer economically viable."

If one of the companies stands to lose more from the abortion, its Stena, who had planned to move shop in order to cut travel times to its Irish Sea destinations.
