French rail moving again

If you were planning to take the ferry to the continent this weekend, you may have noticed that once you arrived, that it wasn't quite so easy to get a train as you may have expected. The strike by French rail workers started last Thursday and caused major disruptions all over the country, not to mention causing chaos in the Paris metro system.

The workers were striking in defence of a policy that is at risk of being taken away which allows certain employees to retire at 50 years old with full benefits. One can understand why the railies want to strike in defence of that rather sweet deal, and with 75% of employees participating in the strikes, it can certainly be hailed a s a success.

Trains slowly came back into service over the weekend, and by today everything is back to normal. So visitors to France shouldn't worry about a ruined holiday at the hands of striking rail workers.
