Getting to France the easy way
Ferry Online Travel News 11/09/2007
Going green no longer a hassle crossing the channel
With the ferry and train system, it's never been easier to get to France from the UK. With the combination of ferry and train or even the Euro tunnel that links the two countries under the English Channel with a direct train route, those wanting to leave the gas guzzler at home have more reason that ever to do so.
The consciousness of global warming and the damage carbon emissions produce on the environment has many Britons opting for a greener way to travel abroad. Teresa O'Brien is one such traveller. A retiree with a holiday home in France, she opts for public transportation to get there.
O'Brien states, "I'm very conscious that flying produces more carbon emissions than driving or going by train, so if we can use public transport, we do. It was more difficult to avoid flying when we were working, but now we have more time to travel and to plan the journey.
We get cheap rail travel in England and France, which is a bargain as long as you book in advance. We try to spend two long holidays there each year, and once we're down there we can get around by bus or train and we plan to buy bikes next time.'
