Cambeltown ferry: will this be the year?
Ferry Online Travel News 05/09/2007
Residents of Campbeltown wait to discover if they will get ferry service this year.
Residents of Campbeltown are waiting once again for an announcement regarding the tender of the ferry service to Northern Ireland. Details of the route must be secured soon or else publicity about the transportation option will not be printed in tourist brochures next year.
This will be the first season for the ferry if it does get tendered and it is likely to get off to a bad start if it misses out on the publicity.
The ferry project to Campbeltown has been talked about for some time now but only recently did politicians get on board and promise some action. The enthusiasm has died down in recent months and residents are left wondering if the ferry project will become a reality this year or not.
Chairman of the Kintyre Initiative Working Group, Donald Kelly said: 'Plenty of politicians from all sides agreeing the service should be reinstated. Plenty of people taking the talk but no one walking the walk. If the ferry isn't put out to tender very soon it is going to be too late for next year for marketing purposes. It is very frustrating and people in Campbeltown are getting very cynical about it.'
Politicians involved seem to be better at discussing the issue than acting on it. Scottish Transportation Minister Steward Stevenson said that many members of the government recognize 'the potential benefits of this proposed service and the importance attached to it by the local communities involved.'
Mr Stevenson added: 'Arrangements are currently being made for me to discuss matters with the Northern Ireland Minister involved.'
So far, however, the issue remains one the is more often discussed that acted upon and while letters fly between Ireland, Scotland and the various ministers and politicians involved, the residents of Cambeltown wait anxiously to discover if this is the year they will get their ferry.
